Listening to NPR: Ask Me Another Podcast (AMA Bonus: TMBG + JoCo, “Re: Your Brains”)
Listening to NPR Topics: Story of the Day Podcast (Never Tell Them The Odds: Cities Vie To Host ‘Star Wars’ Collection)
This morning, I gave the keynote speech the 2014 conference of The Literary Consultancy in London, about the future of publishing. They got the audio up with lightning speed (I’m in the auditorium, listening to the follow-on panel).
In each episode of Gweek, Dean Putney and I invite a guest to join us in a discussion about recommended media, apps, and gadgets. Our guest this week is Maria Konnikova. Here’s what we talked about:
Don’t Point That Thing at Me, by Kyril Bonfiglioli. I’ve recently discovered his work and it is brilliant and hilarious.
The Magician’s Land, by Lev Grossman. Out in August. A conclusion to the trilogy that more than lives up to the first two.
The Gist, Slate’s new podcast, with the wonderful Mike Pesca.
The Outfit, by Richard Stark. In the 3rd Parker novel, Parker goes up against the mob.

A couple weeks ago, Matt Haughey, the founder of TLDR’s favorite website, Metafilter, announced that his website is dying. And he says it’s because Google algorithmically stopped directing traffic to the site over a year ago. Alex tries to figure out what you do when Google’s algorithm decides it no longer likes you.

Calling something “indie” can be divisive, and categorizing a musician as “twee” can be an accusation. But veteran music writer Marc Spitz has happily compiled the ultimate guide to twee culture in his new book Twee. Spitz unites Walt Disney, Pitchfork, and the soft strums of Zoey Deschanel’s ukulele as examples of a “gentle revolution” in his extensive history of twee music, books, and pop culture.
In a conversation with Soundcheck host John Schaefer, Spitz charts the long history of twee icons, stretching back to Walt Disney in the 1940s. He also parses out what distinguishes a thing as “twee” (think handmade, child-like, and sweet), and when twee culture reached a tipping point to become mainstream.
Listen to Marc Spitz’s ultimate twee playlist below:
I was on NPR’s Marketplace yesterday talking (MP3) about our posting of a rarer-than-rare Disney treasure, the never-before-seen original prospectus for Disneyland, scanned before it was sold to noted jerkface Glenn Beck, who has squirreled it away in his private Scrooge McDuck vault.
Most people use social networks to present themselves as happier than they really are - it’s hard to get an honest read on anyone. But writer Charlie Warzel believes there’s a secret method you can use to find out how someone is actually feeling online. On TLDR this week, we try to use Charlie’s method to divine the secret heart of Drake, the rapper.
Thanks for listening. Eric’s tumblr, photos Drake liked, is here. Charlie writes about internet stuff here. If you like our show, please subscribe to us on iTunes. Or you can follow PJ and Alex and TLDR on Twitter. Or Drake on Instagram.
